How to Play Blackjack: Rules and Basic Strategy

Blackjack has one of the most straightforward concepts in casino gaming: get closer to 21 than the dealer without going over. But beneath those simple rules lies a strategic depth that allows experienced players to cut the house edge to under 0.5% by applying basic strategy correctly.

At 988bet, every table follows clear rules and the RTP (return to player) for each variant is displayed before you sit down. That means full transparency — you know exactly what rules you're playing against before wagering a single BRL.

Card Values

In blackjack, numbered cards (2 through 10) are worth their face value. Face cards — Jack, Queen, and King — are each worth 10 points. The Ace is special: it counts as either 11 or 1, whichever is more favorable for your hand. A hand containing an Ace valued at 11 is called a "soft hand" because you can draw another card without any risk of busting.

The Key Decisions in the Game

Hit: request an additional card from the dealer.
Stand: keep your current hand and end your turn.
Double Down: double your initial bet and receive exactly one more card.
Split: when you hold a pair, you can split the cards into two separate hands, each with an equal bet.
Insurance: side bet available when the dealer shows an Ace, paying 2:1 if the dealer has blackjack.
Surrender: in certain variants, you can surrender your hand and recover half your bet.

Simplified Basic Strategy

Basic strategy is a set of mathematically optimized decisions for every possible card combination. By following these rules, the house edge in classic blackjack drops to under 0.5%. Check the chart alongside for the key scenarios — it covers most hands you'll encounter at 988bet's tables.

Live Blackjack: The Full Experience

988bet's live blackjack tables are streamed in real time from professional studios with trained dealers. You watch the cards being dealt right in front of you, can chat with the dealer, and feel the pressure of making decisions as the timer counts down. It's the closest thing to a physical casino without leaving home — or your phone, where the 988bet app runs smoothly even on a 4G connection.

988bet's live tables are open 24 hours a day, every day. Whether you want to play at 2 a.m. after watching Brasileirão or on a lazy Sunday afternoon, there's always a live dealer table waiting for you.

Deposits, Withdrawals & Payments

To play blackjack at 988bet, you can deposit from R$ 20.00 via Pix, boleto bancário, credit/debit card, PicPay, or Mercado Pago. The banks most used by our Brazilian players — Nubank, Itaú, Bradesco, and Banco do Brasil — all work without any issues. Pix is by far the favorite option for its speed: deposits confirmed in seconds, even in the middle of the night.

Won at the table? Pix withdrawals go through in minutes — no fees and no waiting for business days. The minimum withdrawal is R$ 30.00 and the entire process is handled inside your 988bet account, with no extra hassle.

Blackjack Glossary

Get familiar with the key terms before you sit down at the table — especially helpful if you're playing for the first time.

Bust

When your card total exceeds 21. You lose the hand automatically, even if the dealer also busts afterward.

Soft Hand

A hand that contains an Ace counting as 11. A soft hand cannot bust on a single hit, since the Ace can drop to 1.

Hard Hand

A hand with no Ace, or with an Ace that can only count as 1 without busting. Hard hand decisions are more straightforward and mechanical.

Push (Tie)

When you and the dealer finish with the same total. Your bet is returned in full — no win, no loss.

Hole Card

The dealer's card that stays face down until the end of your round. In European Blackjack, this card is only dealt after you've made all your decisions.

Natural Blackjack

When your first two cards total 21 (Ace + a 10-value card). Pays 3:2 at most 988bet tables.

Surrender

An option available in some variants that lets you fold your hand and recover 50% of your bet before the dealer reveals the hole card.

RTP (Return to Player)

The average percentage returned to the player over the long run. In blackjack with basic strategy, RTP can reach 99.5% — the highest in the casino.

Blackjack FAQ

The most common questions from players just getting started or looking to sharpen their understanding of the rules and strategies.

988bet offers both experiences. At the digital blackjack tables, the game uses a Random Number Generator (RNG) certified by independent auditors, ensuring fair and unpredictable results. At the live blackjack tables, real decks are shuffled and dealt by live dealers in professional studios, streamed in real time. You can watch every card being dealt on camera.

Classic blackjack and VIP blackjack offer the highest RTP, reaching up to 99.5% when you apply basic strategy correctly. European Blackjack has an RTP of 99.2% due to the rules around the dealer's hole card. On every 988bet table, the RTP is displayed before you start playing so you can make an informed choice.

Yes, the 988bet casino bonus can be used at both classic and live blackjack tables. Keep in mind that the casino bonus has a 20x rollover requirement on bonus winnings — not on the original deposit. Some live blackjack tables may have a reduced contribution toward the bonus rollover; check the full Terms and Conditions before using the bonus specifically on blackjack.

Card counting is a technique that involves tracking the ratio of high to low cards already dealt from the deck in order to adjust bet sizes. In land-based casinos, this is considered a rules violation and can result in being asked to leave. At 988bet's online tables, the deck is automatically shuffled after every round in digital versions, making counting ineffective. At live tables, decks are shuffled frequently, which significantly reduces the technique's effectiveness.

Classic and turbo blackjack tables have a minimum bet of R$ 5.00, making them the most accessible option for beginners. European blackjack starts at R$ 10.00 per hand. Live tables have a minimum bet of R$ 20.00. The VIP table starts at R$ 100.00 per hand, with a maximum limit of R$ 20,000.00. For all table types, the minimum account deposit is R$ 20.00 via Pix.

Yes! All 988bet blackjack tables are fully compatible with mobile. You can play directly in your Android or iOS browser, or download the 988bet app for a smoother experience. Live tables are also available on mobile via a stream adapted for smaller screens, with all controls laid out intuitively. Stream quality adjusts automatically to your internet speed.

Responsible Gaming in Blackjack

Blackjack is one of the most captivating casino games precisely because it blends luck with decision-making. But that dynamic can also create a stronger sense of control than actually exists. Even with perfect basic strategy, the house edge is real and every hand's outcome is independent of the ones before it.

Session Limit

Set how much time and money you're willing to spend before you open a table. Stick to those limits even when you're winning.

Self-Exclusion

Pause your account for 24 hours, 7 days, or 30 days directly in your settings — no need to contact support.

18+ Only

Blackjack and all 988bet services are strictly for players aged 18 and over. All registrations go through identity verification.
